What I scored at the Guild Auction

posted Sunday, 11 May 2008

First, Happy Mother's Day. I was jolted awake this monrnig by a call from my daughter, telling me she was safe but a tornado had hit Macon, pretty close to where she lives, this morning.

The Guild auction was May 1st. It is only open to Guild members, that way we don't have to charge sales tax on the items sold. The items all come from donations from the members or from local shops. The proceeds help support the guild activities.

Last year there were many lots that called to me, and the bidding went very high on some that I wanted. There were also many many needles for sale, including the nylon circs that have no joins. I love those needles. This year the needle selection was less. I thought the amount of yarn was less too, but in discussion with the member who serves as auctioneer, she said it was about the same. I didn't find as many yarns calling to me this year. I cam home with 2 lots of yarn, 2 books and 1 bag of needles and about half of the money I took to the auction.

Here is what I got:
Shetland et Lin 1 ball and a swatch in greyThis is Shetland et Lin Yarn by Pingoiun.  It is 70% wool and 30% linen. The fibers are blended together and then spun into a 2 ply yarn. The label says, knit as chunky weight. The balls are 50 grams and have 79 yards.  I have 10 full balls, 2 partials and a knitted swatch to work with.

I am not sure what this is destined to become, if you have any suggestions, leave me a comment. I would appreciate it.

I found a yarn that will become mittens:
Jack Frost Kntting Worsted Yarn in Cardinal and Charcoal GreyThis is Jack Frost Yarn. It has obviously been marinating in someone's stash for a looong time. The price sticker says $.99.

The label says it is Knitting Worsted, 4 ounces of vergin wool. No yardage is given.

I have 3 skeins of Cardinal and 2 skeins of Charcoal Grey.

I have some Jack Frost pattern booklets that I inherited from my mother. I bought this yarn to make mittens from those booklets.

I also came home with 2 books:
Cover of Cheaper than Therapy by Annie ModisettThis is Cheaper than Therapy editted by Annie Modisett. It is subtitled Joy, healing and life lessons in fiber. It is a signed copy in really good condition.

There are 34 stories/articles in the book by different authors. I think it will make good bedtime reading as I can read one story each night.

There are no patterns in this book but the other book I purchased does have patterns.

Cover of Country Knitts by Debbie Bliss and Fiona McTague

Sorry about the blurry picture. This is the 2nd book I bought. It is FULL of patterns that are calling to me. Many of the patterns are waist length, which is the best length for me.

I want to make: the Cable Fitted Sweater, the Aran Jacket with Shawl Collar (but NOT in the bright red as shown),the Tapestry Bird and Flower Sweater. the 40s Style Twinset, the Aran Coat, the Reindeer, Hear and Snowflake Cardigan (and maybe the sweater too), the Sporty His and Hers Sweaters and the His and Hers Saddle Shoulder Sweaters

In short I like almost everything in the book. I am sure I won't get to all of them but it would be fin to try.

There are probably no sweaters in my future until my Montessori training is finished.

Last but not least I got a bag of needles:
a bag of steel double point needles most in size 0

Here is the bag of needles I bought. There are 22 needles in the bag. There are at least 2 sizes of needles but I have taken a guage to them yet to determine what sizes. A group of 3 needs have a band of masking tape around them and it is labeled 0, so at least some are probably 0s.

I am making progress on my knee socks. I had to rip out again when I followed the pattern and the sock was too short. So I took the toe out again and knit more lenght. I think I am now ready to reknit the toe. I still have to rip the other sock back to the beginning of the heel and reknit the heel, foot and then toe. They will be finished, soon I hope.
